Experimental Space Physics

Radiation–Matter Interactions • Spectroscopy • Space Experiments

At ElsaesserLab, we study the fundamental interactions of radiation with matter, from individual organic molecules and complex molecular systems to biological structures, microorganisms and functional materials. We investigate how radiation and extreme environments alter their chemical composition, molecular structure and physical properties, with particular relevance to astrochemistry, astrobiology, planetary science and space exploration.

Our experimental approach combines controlled irradiation and space-environment simulations with advanced spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including UV-Vis and infrared spectroscopy, nanoscale infrared imaging (nanoFTIR) and in-situ diagnostics. These methods allow us to investigate radiation-induced processes across different spatial scales, from molecular transformations to changes in complex biological and material systems.

A central part of our research is the development and scientific implementation of experiments under real space conditions. With the ESA-selected OREOcube and Exocube experiments for the International Space Station, we connect ground-based investigations with in-situ measurements in space and develop experimental approaches for future orbital, lunar and planetary missions.
